Information about score downloads

Scores are presented as suitable for modern performers and have not been set up a as scholarly editions. Care has been taken to create scores which reflect what a composer wrote. However, Renaissance music leaves many puzzles. For example:

The pitch of the music might reflect the pitches of the singers available, rather than a fixed pitch. The pitch chosen for pieces reflects what seems reasonable for a good group of singers – but feel free to transpose accordingly.

Texts are often incomplete, with the composer assuming that it will be obvious what to do. Do feel that you can change things.

Accidentals reflect a similar conundrum. They are implied, but not set in stone and care should be taken to use what feels right for the piece. This means that the sharpening or flattening of some notes might seem logical, but only if they create a piece which seems in keeping with the style. Sharps in particular have a tendency to imply an approach to harmony and key which might be viewed as more modern. Above all do what seems best. It is better for the music to be performed than not.

You are purchasing a licence for one organisation. This might be a choir, university or school. Please honour this approach and do not share the music more widely. Prices reflect this approach, and designed to be a reasonable cost, rather than something to make a profit. It takes a lot of time to create the scores, so please treat your purchase with respect and honesty.
